SUPPLY OF INPUTS
The company in its efforts at addressing the social and community needs of cocoa farmers undertook a lot of community activities in collaboration with its partners. These activities among others include; Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System programme, construction of school canteen at Konsimwa Basic School and nursery projects.
Under our CLMRS programme, we have identified 2,540 farmers with 2,468 of them validated and transferred to our system. 6,253 households have been visited with 5,971 of them validated and transferred to the system. 978 child laborers were identified with 807 of them validated and transferred to the system.
Cocoa Merchants with the support of Nestle and Cocoanect constructed a school canteen at Konsimwa in the Adansi North District in the Ashanti Region to support government school feeding programme, with the plan to replicate same gesture in other districts.
Two central nurseries have been established at Konongo and Nsokote as well as 27 community nurseries spread over all districts in our area of operations as part of our sustainability programme. This initiative seeks to alleviate the plight of the cocoa farmers in relation to having to struggle to get cocoa seedling for planting and replanting, whiles at the same time addressing the ageing cocoa tree problem the country is currently faced with. According to COCOBOD, 40% of Ghana’s cocoa trees are currently unproductive. Out of the 40%, 17% have been affected by swollen shoot disease, with 23% being above 30 years and have become unproductive.
